Lipstick as a tool of women's empowerment

For this university module on Past, Present and Futures, we investigated the historical context, current applications, and future implications of lipstick as a case study. We looked at how lipstick has changed over time, using a technology-as-network viewpoint to better comprehend the intersections of art, science, and culture.

Following our preliminary investigation, we chose to explore how lipstick has aided women's strength, confidence, and individuality since its inception 5000 years ago, and how it may continue to do so in the future. We essentially broke lipstick down to its core to understand its history and transformation into the most durable and wearable cosmetic product. Presenting this research as an industry facing report to Chanel, who could use the report for a future ad campaign.   We used a human-centred approach as social scientists to deconstruct the materiality and agency of lipstick in relation to the human experience over time.
